Fans have been extremely interested in Sony’s “games-as-a-service” (GAAS) business model. The new model was intended to be utilized by the end of Fiscal Year 2025, in which there would be as many as twelve titles as part of the new live service. However, Sony has now delayed six of these PlayStation titles, all of which were intended for the service.
As noted via Game Informer, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki revealed that six of the twelve live service games would be released by this time. It seems as though they decided to focus on only six games to be released in an effort to focus on the quality of the titles rather than quantity.
Here’s what Totoki shared:
“We are reviewing this…we are trying as much as possible to ensure [these games] are enjoyed and liked by gamers for a long time,” Totoki said on the earnings call. “[Of] the 12 titles, six titles will be released by [Fiscal Year 2025]. That’s our current plans. [As for] the remaining six titles, we are still working on that.”
He further emphasized that quality is their focus for PlayStation:
“That’s the total number of live service and multiplayer titles [and] mid-to-long-term we want to [push] this kind of service and that’s the unchanged policy of the company. It’s not like we stick to certain titles, but game quality should be the most important [thing].”
Other details at this time are scarce. This includes exactly which games will be released during the Fiscal Year 2025, which concludes in March 2026, or what games have now been delayed. But if Sony is choosing to make these delays based on an effort for quality control – then fans surely won’t mind. Especially with companies like Bungie involved.
Hopefully we’ll have more information in the near future. As for now, fans can play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which happens to be the gaming platform’s fastest-selling first-party game.
