Martin Scorsese’s new movie Killers of the Flower Moon has been doing numbers at the box office in addition to critical acclaim. However, controversy has also surfaced, following a post on social media from Paramount deemed to be offensive and insensitive by many.
The new film revolves around the “Reign of Terror,” a time period in which the Osage nation were murdered by William Hale and his nephews due to the oil they discovered beneath their land.
Robert De Niro plays a version of Hale in the film, and as you can see below, one Twitter user noted how “crazy” his performance was. Namely because the character wears goggles to resemble an owl, a symbol of death for the Osage people.
Interestingly, Paramount had quite the response. The official account for Paramount allegedly replied to the original tweet with “you know he had to do it to ’em,” adding a sunglasses emoji that likely represented De Niro’s goggles. Either way, it was a surprising response, and one that has social media taken aback. In fact, Paramount has since deleted the tweet.

Naturally, many social media users on X shared their disapproval for the tweet, including one of the film’s own stars, Lily Gladstone. Here are some of their responses below:

I was so hoping this tweet wasn’t real. This is horrific, making a meme comment about a movie about the strategic murder of Osage people for their head rights & oil money is not a joke https://t.co/ULqPdxxKU1

Though Paramount has since deleted the tweet, as of this writing, they have yet to release an official statement on the matter. Of course, if the backlash continues, it’s possible they’ll comment on the matter. Especially if they hope to prolong the success of Martin Scorsese‘s film.
