It’s become a difficult time for television, and now ABC has made the decision to cancel a fan-favorite drama series after only one season. This announcement comes not long after the recently-concluded SAG-AFTRA strike, which followed the conclusion of the WGA strike.
As revealed via Deadline, the series – The Rookie: Feds, had “modest” ratings and they were said to be “trending in a positive direction.” It’s certainly disappointing to hear of its cancellation, then, especially because it was “the only ABC singular-lead hourlong broadcast series headlined by a Black actor.”
It’s also said to have delivered enough “respectable ratings” that almost “could’ve been enough to secure a second season had it not been for the dual strikes.” It’s likely, then, that we’ll only continue to see such cancellations as a result of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes as we head into 2024.
For those unfamiliar about The Rookie: Feds, the series starred Nash-Betts “as Simone, a former guidance counselor living her dream of becoming an FBI agent, making her the oldest rookie in the agency. Taking on the role came with challenges as many doubted her capabilities, mainly her boss, Special Agent Matthew Garza (Felix Solis).”
The cast of the series also included Frankie R. Faison as Simone’s dad, James Lesure as Carter Hope, Britt Robertson as Laura Stensen and Kevin Zegers as Brendon Acres.
The series’ co-creators, Alexi Hawley and showrunner Terence Paul Winter, also served as executive producers. The series is also executive produced by Mark Gordon, Nash-Betts, Fillion, Michelle Chapman, Bill Norcross, and Corey Miller. Entertainment One is the lead studio and international distributor of The Rookie: Feds, which is a co-production with ABC Signature.
