The Marvels has finally been released. The follow-up to both Captain Marvel and the Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel sets up a major reboot within the MCU during its post-credits scene, meaning that The Marvels could be even more important than previously speculated.
Marvel Studios has been gradually taking advantage of Disney’s Fox acquisitions. This means that the studio is slowly planting the seeds to introduce the X-Men franchise to the MCU. Fans saw some of this in Ms. Marvel, when it was teased that Kamala Khan could very well be the franchise’s first mutant. Now, however, The Marvels is taking this a step further.
It looks like the post-credits scene for The Marvels actually takes place within Fox’s X-Men universe – or at least one close to it. This begins with the reintroduction of Kelsey Grammer as a comic-accurate Beast aka Hank McCoy. He previously played the role in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
This does seem to suggest it could be the same X-Men universe. Especially because he also mentions Charles Xavier, aka Professor X. Though a variant of that character also appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Nevertheless, Marvel Studios is setting up the X-Men, and it could very well lead to the reboot featuring the fan-favorite superhero team.
The aforementioned post-credits scene continues to find Monica Rambeau stuck inside this new universe following the events of The Marvels. It’s unknown what exactly will happen next, but it seems as though Deadpool 3 may have the answers in 2024.
The upcoming X-Men spin-off and Deadpool sequel is expected to further tie Fox’s X-Men films with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s likely, then, that all of this does pave the way for a brand-new X-Men reboot in addition to the crossover event Avengers: Secret Wars. We’ll just have to see what happens.
The Marvels is currently playing in theaters.
