The Shrek movie franchise has been somewhat dormant over the years. Aside from the occasional Puss in Boots film or other spin-offs, it was unclear whether or not Shrek 5 would ever happen. Now it appears that the release date for the film has just been leaked online.
As you can see below, an intern at NBC Universal accidentally shared details for the film on their LinkedIn page. Of course, this should be taken with a grain of salt, as Universal has yet to officially announce the film. But there have already been strong indications that Shrek 5 was already in the works.
Here’s a tweet with a screenshot of the LinkedIn page which has been going viral on social media:

Obviously there aren’t many details to go by in this image. But the intern claims that they were involved with generating “consumer product ideas” for a number of films which happened to include Shrek 5. He also credits the film as being “DreamWorks Animation 2025.”
Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri previously teased that a fifth installment of the popular franchise was in development. In fact, he even suggested that the original cast could return for the film, though that has yet to be confirmed at this time. But it certainly looks like this could be a direct sequel to the original four films.
In fact, the ending of the recently-released blockbuster Puss in Boots: The Last Wish even set the stage for a proper Shrek sequel. The film takes place approximately ten years after Shrek: Forever After and ends with Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws setting sail for the Kingdom of Far Far Away along with their friend Perrito.
Everything is certainly lining up for a fifth Shrek entry, and the 2025 release date does seem right. Though with ongoing strikes and other such dilemmas, we’ll have to see what gets officially announced.
