One of the downsides with the Scream franchise is that fan-favorite actor Matthew Lillard only appears in the first installment. Fortunately, he makes a major comeback in the new horror movie Five Nights at Freddy’s as its primary antagonist. Now it looks like a Scream Easter egg brings together the best of both worlds in Blumhouse‘s new Five Nights at Freddy’s film.
Matthew Lillard is known for having played Stu Macher throughout the first Scream. His character is revealed at the end of the film to be one of two movie-obsessed masked serial killers. There’s a similar reveal at the end of Five Nights at Freddy’s where his character, William Afton, is revealed to have been a child murderer hidden beneath a Springtrap animatronic suit. But the similarities don’t end there.
Moviegoers have taken to social media to reveal a nicely-placed reference to Matthew Lillard’s Stu character during his Five Nights at Freddy’s reveal. As you can see below, he cleans blood off of his knife in the same way that his Stu character did as Ghostface:

Fortunately, unlike the Scream film franchise, it looks like Matthew Lillard will reprise his role for future Five Nights at Freddy’s installments. His own character, in a reference to the video games, claims “I always come back!” before he dies. This sets the stage for William Afton to become the recurring antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, whereas the Ghostface killers in the Scream films are always replaced each time.
It’s definitely nice to see Matthew Lillard have the opportunity to play yet another massive role in the horror genre. Of course, he’s made fantastic appearances in both film and television over the years, including other horror properties. But it’s clear that Five Nights at Freddy’s will be one of the biggest brands yet for the beloved actor.
For now, fans can currently see Five Nights at Freddy’s in theaters or stream it at home via Peacock.
