The 2022 superhero movie Samaritan, which premiered via Prime Video, is getting a sequel. Furthermore, actor Sylvester Stallone is returning to star in Samaritan 2 and act as producer.
As revealed via THR, Bragi F. Schut has been hired to pen the script for the sequel after having penned the original film. In addition to The Expendables star, who made his deal to star in the sequel prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, his Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood will also return to produce.
For those unfamiliar, Julius Avery directed the original film, which has been descripted by the publication as telling the story “of a young boy who is saved from a beating by a sanitation worker. The boy comes to believe that the older man is a superhero who disappeared 20 years earlier, after an epic battle with his archenemies.”
Schut is also said to act as an executive producer on the sequel alongside Adam Rosenberg. Schut’s had quite a bit of success in recent years, which in addition to Samaritan included the 2019 hit Escape Room. He co-wrote the film which managed to spawn its own sequel in 2022. Additionally, Schut was also the first screenwriter for 2023’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which he first penned as a Dracula-inspired spec script in the early 1990’s.
On that note, Samaritan is certainly an interesting movie to see receive a sequel, especially as it’s something of a superhero movie. The superhero genre has become rather divisive in recent years, not just between Marvel and DC, but between different eras of those brands. Samaritan is an interesting outlier by being an original IP and we’ll have to see where the sequel takes its story.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Samaritan 2 as we have them. It’s certainly exciting to know that Sylvester Stallone will once again return to be involved with the film – so hopefully we’ll have more details soon once the actors’ strike comes to an end.
