There are plenty of new superheroes and supervillains that have been introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years. Of course, many fans miss the original roster that helped the franchise become what it is today. This includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. And, according to a new rumor, he’s reportedly agreed to return to the MCU as Iron Man.

Robert Downey Jr. first played the role of Iron Man in 2008’s film of the same name. It set the path for what would ultimately become the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, by the end of Avengers: Endgame, his character Iron Man – aka Tony Stark – gave his life to save the universe. It seemed likely that this would be the last of the fan-favorite character. At least for the version played by Robert Downey Jr., anyways.

Now, according to insider @MyTimeToShineH via X, that might not be the case. Though he didn’t supply many details, he shared the following statement which sent Marvel fans into a frenzy:

“RDJ already agreed to come back”

This lines up with a recent report from Variety. According to their sources, “there have been talks to bring back the original gang for an Avengers movie. This would include reviving Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, both of whom were killed off in Endgame.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be too difficult to do so at this point. Sure, Tony Stark is dead – but the MCU has been going to great lengths to introduce their very own Multiverse. This means that any number of variants for any character can exist. It’s also allowed the MCU to connect to past Marvel adaptations that exist in different continuities, including Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Fox’s X-Men films. Though it’s unknown if that’s the direction such a return for Robert Downey Jr. could take. But the potential is certainly there.

As such, we’ll have to see what happens. Especially with epic crossover events on the way like Avengers: Secret Wars.
