Disney recently announced a delay for their upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White. Now a report claims that they did so because they fear Snow White could become a “financial disaster” for the company.
As a new report reminds us, Disney “announced it had pushed back the film’s release until March 2025 – a whole year after the scheduled date – citing the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike as the driving force behind the decision.” According to the Daily Mail, however, they have a different explanation for Disney’s delay.
Of course, the film has already faced a tremendous amount of backlash for numerous reasons. This began with the decision to cast Rachel Zegler as the titular character. Later, Zegler made comments about how the 1937 animated film is outdated and that the Prince is a “stalker,” which drew backlash from devoted fans.
There was also backlash against the decision to allegedly replace the film’s dwarfs with “magical creatures,” though the first look at the film revealed that there would in fact be CGI dwarfs. A decision that, likewise, received complaints from fans. Now it seems like Disney could be worried about “what to do” with the film, according to Daily Mail. They claim to have been told by an insider that “Disney is said to be ‘figuring out what to do’ after making a $330 million turkey – and is looking to Tom Hooper’s widely panned Cats as a guide on what to avoid.”
Here’s what the insider shared:
“Disney had to delay Snow White because they have spent so much money on it, and if it is a financial disaster at the box office, it might single handedly cripple future remakes and potential Snow White sequels that they have planned,” the insider claimed.
“They also have to remove themselves from the bad taste in the mouths of online critics and want to instead deliver a great film and get to a point where they get it right.
“They realize that they were overthinking things and are now reigning it all in a little bit more.”
It’s worth noting that these statements should be taken with a grain of salt. For now, we only know that Disney had to delay the film due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens with the film by the time it’s released.
