The Marvel Cinematic Universe is often recognized for being produced on a PG-13 scale. Since the introduction of Disney Plus, however, Disney and Marvel Studios have been experimenting with pushing the limits of their franchise. Now the trailer for the new series Echo confirms it will be the first MCU series with a TV-MA rating.
Of course, Marvel fans might recall that Netflix had several violent shows available on their platform. This included the fan-favorite series Daredevil. But these shows were actually produced under Marvel TV, not Marvel Studios, so it looks like Echo is the first sign that Marvel Studios will follow their footsteps for certain projects.
And, with shows like Daredevil: Born Again on the way, it’s nice to know that Marvel is open to delivering whatever content these shows might require. If that includes a sense of realism or genuine brutality, then it’s clear now that fans will get it. Echo certainly marks a new direction for the franchise and we’ll have to see what other characters or properties might have the opportunity to be released in such a fashion.
Here’s the official trailer for Echo:
Fans should also note that this will be the first series led by not only an indigenous character, but one that is also deaf and uses ASL to communicate. Alaqua Cox stars as said lead, and if the trailer is any indication, she gives a terrific performance as the character. This series will also follow her introduction in the Disney Plus series Hawkeye, which clearly not only paved the path for this particular series, but other upcoming Marvel projects like Daredevil: Born Again. This is definitely opening up a whole new corner for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to expand in.
Fans will be able to stream the new Marvel series Echo via Disney Plus and Hulu on January 10.
