The Halloween movie franchise recently concluded (for now, anyways) with Halloween Ends. On the other hand, John Carpenter’s The Fog never became a franchise like its predecessor Halloween, aside from a 2005 remake. A fan theory aims to connect the two, however, by making Halloween into a prequel to The Fog.
Obviously this would just make The Fog one of numerous alternate sequels to Halloween. But it’s still an interesting concept and one that adds a nice layer of context to Jamie Lee Curtis‘s character, Elizabeth, who happens to be a little too mysterious in The Fog.
Elizabeth, full name Elizabeth Solley, is introduced in The Fog as a hitchhiker. She’s picked up by Tom Atkins’ character Nick Castle and the two immediately begin a conversation. Nick asks her for her name and, after hesitating a moment, she answers “Elizabeth.”
It’s worth noting that her name is recognized as being Elizabeth for the rest of the film. But the theory suggests that she was lying. In fact, the theory suggests that she’s one Laurie Strode, hitchhiking under a fake identity following the events of Halloween. It’s a simple theory and one that does actually make sense if you disregard any of the actual Halloween sequels.
In fact, after finding out her name, Nick asks where she’s from. It’s here that she becomes defensive about answering. But she does eventually open up to say Pasadena. Now, Laurie Strode is from Haddonfield, Illinois, but it’s possible that she’d just traveled to Pasadena or that Elizabeth was simply lying about everything altogether.
She further hints at her mysterious past by apologizing for the weird occurrences in the film. Nick asks why she’d apologize and she says, “Things seem to happen to me. I’m bad luck.” It’s possible that she was referring to Michael Myers, the mysterious stalker that followed Laurie Strode and her friends on Halloween night.
In fact, lying about her identity wouldn’t even be a first for Laurie Strode. In Halloween: 20 Years Later, the entire movie was built around the fact that she’d changed her name and backstory to create a new life for her and her son. So, in a franchise with multiple different sequels already, it’s not too hard to think of The Fog as just one such continuation.
