The Black Phone was a surprising horror hit, based on a story by Joe Hill and directed by Scott Derrickson. Now fans will be delighted to hear that The Black Phone 2 is officially happening.
Fans may have to wait some time, however, as the sequel is currently dated for a release in 2025. Universal and Blumhouse have the film set for a release on Juny 27, 2025, as revealed via Deadline.
The publication notes that there is “no creative announcement on this, or whether filmmaker Scott Derrickson is returning.” As such, it’s unknown what the plot of the film will be. Though the writer for the first Black Phone film teased an exciting new idea for the sequel.
According to his tweet, C. Robert Cargill was intent on only writing a sequel to The Black Phone if there was “a really great idea.” Additionally, he noted that this idea came directly from the original story’s writer, Joe Hill, and that both he and Scott Derrickson were immediately onboard.
Me: I’m only going to make a Black Phone sequel if we have a really great idea.

Joe Hill: So I’ve got a really great idea.
Me and Scott 30 seconds later: So we’re making a Black Phone sequel.

Of course, Derrickson’s or Cargill’s involvement have yet to be officially announced, so it’s unknown in what capacity they’ll be working on the sequel. But it’s certainly going to be an exciting concept – especially if Joe Hill originated the idea for The Black Phone 2 himself.
For those unfamiliar with the premise of the first film from Universal and Blumhouse, it revolves around Ethan Hawke who plays a sadistic serial killer. He abducts a 13-year-old boy played by Mason Thames, and the boy ultimately receives help from the voices of the killer’s previous victims.
