In addition to traditional film and television, Netflix is quite well-known for its compelling documentaries. Now one shocking horror documentary is dominating the Netflix streaming charts.
The Devil on Trial is doing quite well for itself on Netflix, consistently staying in the streaming platform’s Top 10 most watched, according to data from FlixPatrol. Of course, that might not be surprising, as the case within the documentary has become quite an iconic piece of discussion in recent years. Especially since it was also the basis for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
Indeed, The Devil on Trial revolves around the first and only time that “demonic possession” was used as an official defense in a murder trial in the United States. In order to examine the shocking story behind the murder trial, the documentary uses both reenactments and home videos to tell its story.
In addition to having been written and directed by Chris Holt, the Netflix horror documentary also includes versions of Ed and Lorraine Warren for its reenactments. After all, they were a part of the incident as suggested in the events of The Conjuring 3. Of course, that film had some creative embellishments courtesy of Hollywood, and this documentary attempts to provide a more grounded perspective. Victor Serfaty portrays Ed Warren for the documentary while Susannah Spearin portrays Lorraine Warren.
It’s worth noting that in real-life, though “demonic possession” was used as an official defense, the judge ruled that it was not acceptable. Furthermore, he did not permit any evidence related to possession in the trial. Though the case still grew in popularity following its spread in the media in 1981. Now, decades later, it continues to captivate viewers.
