The Halloween movie franchise continues to frighten and excite viewers to this day. Outside of Halloween III: Season of the Witch, an outlier in the slasher series, this is mostly due to the presence of iconic villain Michael Myers. Now original Halloween director John Carpenter has opened up to confirm why Michael Myers can’t die.
The undefeatable nature of Michael Myers was first teased in the original 1978 film. However, decade after decade, Michael Myers has proven himself to be a recurring nightmare. Something that despite the best efforts of numerous protagonists, even to the point of actually killing Michael, he still manages to come back.
Of course, this is often due to the creativity (or lack thereof) of the writers sometimes involved. Michael Myers has been brought back via loopholes, i.e. Halloween Resurrection, and new timelines like 2018’s Halloween. But here’s why, as shared via ScreenRant, Carpenter believes Michael Myers will never stay dead:
“Well, I’ll tell you what, he’s an all-purpose character. If want the first movie, you’ve got that. If you want him to be able to kill all the time, you’ve got that. The only other all-purpose monster is Godzilla.”
Godzilla is certainly a great comparison. He’s an iconic movie monster that has been reinvented as both a villain and a hero multiple times. In fact, there are numerous new iterations of the character on the way right now, both with new appearances in the U.S.’s MonsterVerse and Japan’s own reboot titled Godzilla Minus One. And while Michael’s role hasn’t changed from villain to hero, he’s certainly been placed in just as many new timelines and retellings of his classic story.
Now Michael Myers is likely set to make his return in the near future. Despite the outcome of Halloween Ends, a new Halloween television series is in development, with Miramax having acquired the rights. This makes them the co-owner of both the film and television rights for Halloween. As such, Michael Myers definitely isn’t going anywhere any time soon. And that’s why Michael Myers cannot die.
