Due to his filmmaking history, comments made by Martin Scorsese are rarely taken lightly. This can be seen with responses to his comments regarding Marvel and the state of cinema today. Now Scorsese is sharing a horror movie which left him “so unsettled” that he could not sleep.
As shared by Slashfilm, the Taxi Driver director was stunned by a rather newer horror film. Specifically the movie Pearl directed by Ti West. As fans know, Pearl is a prequel to X, and offers fans quite the character study as a result. It seems as though Scorsese was equally stunned by the character.
Here’s what he shared:
“Ti West’s movies have a kind of energy that is so rare these days, powered by a pure, undiluted love for cinema. You feel it in every frame. A prequel to X made in a diametrically opposite cinematic register (think 50s Scope color melodramas), Pearl makes for a wild, mesmerizing, deeply — and I mean deeply — disturbing 102 minutes. West and his muse and creative partner Mia Goth really know how to toy with their audience … before they plunge the knife into our chests and start twisting. I was enthralled, then disturbed, then so unsettled that I had trouble getting to sleep. But I couldn’t stop watching.”
Obviously Scorsese has quite a bit of experience with creating such character studies. So seeing him talk about Ti West, Mia Goth, and their work on Pearl with such high regard is true praise. And with a new film on the way, titled MaXXXine, fans are certainly in for another treat.
After all, fans seem to share Scorsese’s thoughts, with many viewers being impressed by Goth’s performance and the unique style of the movie. While X took influence from the 1970s, Pearl took an incredible amount of inspiration from the 1920s and 1930s.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Martin Scorsese or the works of Ti West as we have them. As mentioned, MaXXXine is on the way, and it’s set to conclude Mia Goth’s story established in X.
