The fifth and most recent installment in the Final Destination horror franchise was released in 2011. Fans have been patiently waiting for a comeback ever since. Now the sixth film is finally being prepped for production – and a new report suggests that Final Destination 6 will be a “reboot” of the series.
Of course, it’s unclear what exactly that means, though it’s said to be “a really fresh take.” This was shared by the film’s production designer, Rachel O’Toole, who spoke with The Direct about the project. Interestingly, O’Toole reveals that the film was also close to production prior to the WGA strike.
Here’s what O’Toole shared about the project:
“Well, we started working, and then we were put on hold because of the writers’ strike. We were two weeks away from cameras. So we were deeply involved in building that world out. I would say, when I read the script, I was like, I continued wanting to read it. And sometimes when you’re reading a script, you’re just like, ‘Oh, okay, okay. Chuck this back, you know, like for the interview, pretend to love it.’ But I actually really did love it. It’s got a really fresh take on it, and we do consider it a reboot. But stay tuned, I suppose. I can’t say anything about it.”
Plot details for the film are obviously being kept under wraps. Despite being called a reboot, however, the publication notes that actor Tony Todd is expected to return as William Bludworth. As such, it does seem as though this particular reboot will take place in the franchise’s original continuity. It’s whatever this “fresh take” turns out to be, then, that should really surprise audiences.
Hopefully more information is released soon on that front. The franchise has certainly done its best to shock fans, however, with the reveal that the fifth film was actually a prequel being a popular twist. Now it looks like the sixth film will continue that trend by being something quite unexpected.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Final Destination 6 and any other highly-anticipated horror projects as we have them. Hopefully things are sorted out soon enough for production to finally begin. After all, with more than a decade having passed, it’s about time the Final Destination franchise makes its long-awaited return with this reboot.
