The Marvel Cinematic Universe is moving forward this November with a brand-new follow-up to Captain Marvel. The new MCU sequel, titled The Marvels, is set to follow the events of the aforementioned blockbuster in addition to the Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel. Unfortunately, The Marvels is facing low box office projections ahead of its November release.
This is quite concerning because The Marvels is not an inexpensive movie. In fact, it’s one of the most expensive MCU movies to be made yet. As such, it’s imperative that the film hits it big at the box office. According to Box Office Pros, however, the film might not be as big as Disney is no doubt hoping.
They’ve projected the film to earn between $50 million and $75 million domestically during its opening weekend. It’s then expected to make between $121 million and $189 million in total domestically.
Now, compared to the first film, that particular movie was estimated to make over $100 million at the box office domestically during its opening weekend. That’s a big difference. Especially when in actuality, it made $150 million domestically during its opening weekend.
As such, if the film hits the lower end of the projections, The Marvels could hold the record for the MCUs lowest domestic opening weekend at the box office. This record currently belongs to the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk. The film opened when the MCU first began, and so it’ll be interesting to see if The Marvels takes its place.
The Marvels was directed by Candyman director Nia DaCosta from a script written by Megan McDonnell.
The cast for the film includes Brie Larson as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. Samuel L. Jackson also reprises his role as Nick Fury for the movie.
The Marvels is set to hit theaters everywhere on November 10, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news on the upcoming film The Marvels and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we have it.
