The superhero genre has faced several films in recent years with divisive reactions from viewers. Quite a few of these movies were the result of Sony and their eagerness to create a shared universe like the MCU. Morbius was one of their biggest efforts in this department, yet it would go on to receive two Razzies amidst other negative reviews. Now the Marvel superhero movie has somehow hit the Top 10 on streaming.
This was reported via FlixPatrol. As their stats show, the film is currently streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video service. And it’s been doing so incredibly well. As mentioned, the title has already broken into the streaming platform’s Top 10 titles.
Of course, despite the film’s critical and financial failures, it’s done quite well in becoming an internet meme and viral sensation. It’s possible that the film’s popularity from such memes helped the Spider-Man spin-off go viral.
Either way, it’s unknown if Jared Leto’s titular character will be making a comeback any time soon. The film certainly promises as much, with Michael Keaton’s Vulture insisting that he and Morbius team up. But the direction for Sony’s shared universe has been vague at best, and with spin-offs like Venom about to receive their second sequel, it’s clear that Morbius wasn’t as successful as the studio hoped.
Still, even without a direct sequel, perhaps we’ll see Leto’s character make an appearance in another film. There are other such projects in the works from Sony, including Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web, where an appearance from the character is indeed possible.
The 2022 superhero film only grossed $167.5 million worldwide at the box office on a budget that’s estimated to be about $75 million to $83 million. But perhaps this success from streaming on Amazon Prime Video will continue to help the studio in making back some of its losses from the superhero flick.
