Thor: Love and Thunder has further expanded the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the cosmic beings that reside within. This has sparked a fan theory surrounding Thanos, one of the franchise’s most powerful villains, which as a result has caused something of a plot hole.
Thanos is known for having wiped out half of all life in the universe with the power of the Infinity Stones. According to a newly-surfaced Reddit theory, however, Thanos could have actually done so in a much different way. Specifically one which Gorr used in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Fans will recall that Gorr sought out a cosmic entity in the movie known as Eternity. This entity, upon being found, will grant the finder any wish that they have. Gorr wanted to bring his daughter back from the dead. As for Thanos, he clearly could have used his wish to achieve his goals instead of using the Infinity Stones. That is if he found Eternity.
Of course, Gorr was mostly only able to do so with the Necrosword, which Thanos did not have. It also likely would have been impossible to reach Eternity without the use of Bitfrost. As such, it can make sense why Thanos depended on the Infinity Stones instead. It also seems to indicate that Eternity is the most powerful being in the MCU so far – especially if Thanos himself couldn’t reach him or even know about his existence.
Ultimately, we’ll have to accept that the MCU is constantly changing, and that the rules for its cosmic characters aren’t static. They adapt over time just like the franchise itself.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Marvel Cinematic Universe updates as we have them. For now, plot holes like these are inevitable, especially for a franchise that expands as much as the MCU happens to. If nothing else, it makes for great conversation.
