Michael Mann has been involved with a number of fan-favorite films over the decades. Now ahead of the release of his latest movie, Ferrari, Mann has just confirmed his next project. Fans of Heat will be excited to know that Michael Mann will indeed be directing Heat 2 next.
This was confirmed by Mann himself during a panel discussion for Deadline Hollywood. The discussion was being held for Ferrari, though Mann did reveal that Heat 2 will be his next project to shoot. Additionally, the story will be set in both the past and the present, with the 2022 novel of the same name being a source of inspiration.
“Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari,” Mann begins.
“It did very well. I plan to shoot that next.”
The first Heat film was both a critical and financial success. It featured extremely memorable performances from both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. While De Niro won’t reprise his role for the sequel, there are prequel elements involved, and it looks like we could be seeing a younger version of his character. Excitingly enough, it looks like Ferrari star Adam Driver could be playing the part.
“Adam and I talked about it extensively from before the strike began when we were still shooting Ferrari,” Mann reveals.
It’s unknown if original cast members Pacino or Val Kilmer could return. Though it’s possible that they too will be recast for the storylines revolving around the younger versions of their characters. In any case, we’ll have to see how the project develops. For now, a release date has yet to be scheduled.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Michael Mann’s upcoming projects, including Heat 2, as we have them. It’ll be exciting to see the film finally happen following the success of the book, and so many years after the first film was released.
