There have been several attempts to reboot the Predator franchise over the years. It was finally Disney and 20th Century Studios’ Hulu movie Prey that succeeded. The film was a hit with both fans and critics, and now it looks like a Prey sequel is in development.
Of course, this might not be surprising for fans. Prey seemed to lend itself to a sequel by the end of the film, and with such successful reception, a sequel looked like a no-brainer. Now, as shared via World of Reel, a Production Weekly listing seems to indicate that work on the sequel is underway.
It’s unknown exactly what take a sequel could follow. Of course, as mentioned, Prey does end with the potential to continue its own story. Though Amber Midthunder‘s Naru has successfully killed the alien hunter that’s been attacking her tribe, the credits reveal that an entire fleet of alien ships are approaching. It’s also worth noting that the gun in her possession must eventually end up with the Predators, given that that’s where it is by the time Predator 2 happens.
Otherwise, it looks like Disney could begin making a number of stand-alone Predator – or Prey – films that take place in different time periods. If that’s the case, there are seemingly endless scenarios that could be cooked up. Especially given how receptive audiences have been to Prey.
Ultimately, we’ll have to see what happens. But one thing is for certain – the Predator film franchise is far from over. It’s quite exciting when you consider how many attempts at continuing the franchise didn’t go as planned in the past. Predator 2 didn’t do as well as hoped, Predators failed to reboot the brand, and so did The Predator. Likewise, the Alien vs. Predator crossovers weren’t much of a hit either. Hopefully this means the new Prey approach can continue to do well.
