Actor Robert Englund is perhaps best known for his role as Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street and its sequels. Now Robert Englund is recommending another horror movie for genre fans to check out in time for Halloween.
Englund spoke at Terror Con in Marlborough, MA for a 45-minute panel when he brought up the recommendation. In fact, it came up after he named a variety of his favorite horror movies which included such classics as The Witch, Rosemary’s Baby, The Silence of the Lambs, and The Exorcist.
As Robert Englund continued discussing his favorites, however, he got to the Halloween recommendation. It began with the mention of the film’s star: Angela Bettis. “Angela Bettis in May,” he begins.
“You should all watch May this Halloween,” Englund continues, “Underrated, great, nasty film.”
The film opens as something of a black comedy, with the film’s lead as a socially awkward veterinary assistant. She had a troubled childhood due to her “lazy eye” and the film’s narrative follows her as her obsession for perfection grows. This is set off by her crush on a boy with perfect hands, something that takes the movie on a much darker path than expected. After all, as Englund himself states, it is a “nasty film.”
Lucky McKee both wrote and directed May which also acted as his directorial debut. In addition to Bettis as the film’s titular character, the film includes Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris, and Donnie Darko actor James Duval.
