Disney Plus is a newer streaming service, one that’s only been around for a few years, but it’s quickly gone through a number of changes. This includes a variety of price increases and now it looks like Disney Plus will begin a password-sharing crackdown. This has become a very popular practice over the past year or so. In fact, Netflix has notoriously been making major strides in cutting down password-sharing.
Now, as noted via Variety, Disney Plus aims to do the same. Interestingly, it looks like they’ll also be reserving the right to terminate the accounts of violators.
Here’s what was shared to users in Canada about their decision which will go into effect as soon as November 1, 2023:
“Unless otherwise permitted by your service tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household.”
Additionally, for those subscribers who’ve violated their terms regarding password-sharing, Disney Plus notes that they “may limit or terminate access to the service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this agreement.”
This isn’t the only major change happening in Canada on November 1. In addition to other international territories, Variety notes the following will go into effect for the streaming service which owns such properties as The Mandalorian:
“Meanwhile, also beginning Nov. 1, the company is set to launch the Disney+ ad-supported plan in Canada (priced at $7.99/month) as well as the U.K. and eight European countries.”
Disney is also set to implement the following price increases:
“Disney is raising prices for the standalone premium tiers of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ in the U.S. Effective Oct. 1, Disney+ Premium (with no ads) increases to $13.99/month, up $3; Hulu without ads will also increase by $3 to $17.99/month; and ESPN+ will increase by one dollar, to $10.99/month.”
As such, we’ll have to see how these changes work out for Disney’s streaming service. It’s clear that many subscribers, including fans of Marvel and Star Wars, will be expressing their disappointment.
