The Saw movie franchise is known for its increasingly complicated timeline. Now Oren Koules, producer for the upcoming sequel, has revealed where Saw X falls on this timeline and how fans should treat the sequel. As it happens, the new film is essentially a direct sequel to James Wan‘s original Saw.
The series already has a direct sequel to 2004’s Saw with Saw II, released one year later in 2005. Of course, that film revolves around its twist that Amanda is really working with John Kramer. As such, there aren’t many scenes between the two characters until the later films in the franchise. But Saw X will rectify this by placing John and Amanda as key characters working together in the new film’s narrative.
Here’s what Koules shared about when Saw X takes place on the timeline:

As such, it’ll be interesting to have a film set between films as opposed to simply using flashbacks to include Tobin Bell’s John Kramer or Shawnee Smith’s Amanda. But with so many other storylines left untouched so far – one can only hope the Saw franchise can jump back to the present as well.
Kevin Greutert, director of Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, will be directing this new installment of the franchise. He previously edited the first five Saw films as well in addition to Jigsaw.
With Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith portraying their respective characters from the franchise, the film also includes newcomers Renata Vaca, Paulette Hernandez, Joshua Okamoto, Octavio Hinojosa, Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, and Michael Beach.
This next installment in the Saw movie franchise, Saw X, is currently scheduled to be released this year on September 29, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional Saw updates as we have them.
