As is the case with many horror classics, there are often numerous sequels or other additions released to cash-in on the hype. For one aforementioned horror classic, however, its prequel has reached the top spot for horror movies on Netflix.
The Tudum site, as of this writing, reveals that Leatherface reached the #1 horror movie spot globally on Netflix. This is quite the honor considering it’s been years since the film’s initial release in 2017. On that note, the film also didn’t have the best reception at the time, but it looks like viewers are warming up to the flick all these years later.
It’s worth noting that this movie is not canon with the actual sequel – titled Texas Chainsaw Massacre – released by Netflix. This 2017 prequel was produced by a different team based on characters introduced in 2013’s sequel, Texas Chainsaw 3D. This particular film was an alternate direct sequel to Tobe Hooper‘s original 1974 film, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. This then creates something of a trilogy between Leatherface, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Texas Chainsaw 3D.
Here are some of the tweets that viewers of Leatherface on Netflix shared:

It’s certainly interesting to see so many positive responses to Leatherface. After all, the film takes some unique approaches to certain characters – including the titular villain – and how they connect to the original film. With the success of the new video game, however, it does make sense that fans are trying to get their Chainsaw fix any way they can.
Perhaps this level of hype can prompt Netflix to follow through with a sequel to 2022’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre. For those unfamiliar, that particular film only followed the 1974 original. Though there is room for the original three sequels to have taken place in between as well.
