Hulu just announced another cancellation for a fan-favorite series. This particular show only made it three seasons before the streaming service, mostly owned by Disney, gave it the ax.
As noted by THR, the series happens to be the period dramedy The Great. They add that the cancellation “comes some three-and-a-half months after the show’s third (and now final) season premiered as a binge release in May.” Interestingly, the series earned quite a few Emmy nominations throughout its run, which makes the cancellation even more surprising.
It won the award for outstanding period costumes in 2022 and both of the show’s stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult earned acting nominations. Two years prior, in 2020, series creator Tony McNamara and director Matt Shakman were given writing and directing nods for the show’s premiere episode.
Of course, given the show’s high critical acclaim, that might not be a surprise. Unfortunately, it’s unknown what the viewership numbers for The Great were, and it’s possible that they just weren’t high enough for Hulu to continue producing the series. Nevertheless, three seasons is a solid number, especially at a time when streaming services have no problem canceling shows even after one season.
For those unfamiliar, the series stars Fanning and Hoult as it explores the relationship of Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Peter III in the 18th century.
The other cast members that were featured throughout the most recent season of the series included Phoebe Fox, Sacha Dhawan, Charity Wakefield, Gwilym Lee, Adam Godley, Douglas Hodge, Belinda Bromilow, Bayo Gbadamosi, Florence Keith-Roach, Freddie Fox and Grace Molony.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on Hulu and their shows as we have them. The streaming service industry has certainly changed quite a bit in the last few years, and it’s likely this is far from the last major cancellation we’ll be seeing. Especially when looking at the recent history of platforms like Netflix.
