Fans waited years for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to hit theaters. Now the long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is finally available on Disney Plus. Unfortunately, director James Gunn called out one mistake from the Marvel movie’s Disney Plus debut.
James Gunn discussed the mistake on the social media platform Threads. As you can see below, a fan asked whether the widescreen or IMAX Enhanced version of the film would be better to stream. Gunn explains that the “widescreen” version is his preferred way to watch at home.
Furthermore, a fan pointed out that the thumbnail for the IMAX Enhanced version of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 on Disney Plus isn’t accurate. It displays a cropped version of the widescreen thumbnail rather than what it should actually look like. James Gunn confirms that this fan is correct and that it’s a mistake on Disney Plus.
“Yeah the IMAX version isn’t cropped,” James Gunn confirms. “It’s all new stuff top and bottom.”

Fortunately, Disney Plus seems to have taken these comments to heart. They quickly updated the thumbnails to more accurately represent the different aspect ratios. And, as one can see upon using Disney Plus now, the thumbnail for the IMAX Enhanced Version of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does feature more visuals at the top and bottom of the screen.
It’s certainly interesting that Disney Plus would offer the IMAX version of the film to stream. Of course, there is some controversy, especially given how James Gunn purposefully shot the film. As such, it isn’t surprising to see that he supports the widescreen version of the movie instead. Either way, fans can make their own choice, and it should be easier now that Disney Plus has the correct thumbnails on display.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news as we have it. Although this is James Gunn’s last Guardians film, he’s busy preparing a relaunch of the DC film franchise with Superman: Legacy.
