After the success of Scream and Scream VI, fans are already excited for the next installment. Now Scream 7 has been officially announced with filmmaker Christopher Landon attached to replace Radio Silence as director.
The news about Christopher Landon acquiring the Scream 7 gig was confirmed via THR. As they note, “Landon takes over from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence, who helmed the 2022 installment that rebooted and refurbished the movie series.”
The reason for Radio Silence’s absence for the upcoming seventh installment is explained as follows:
“Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett stepped back, in part, to focus on an original horror movie for Universal,” which they note “remains impacted by the actors strike.” Though the claim that “the duo, as well as third group member Chad Villella, will now act as executive producers.” As such, they should still have some influence on the project.
With that in mind, THR adds that it’s unknown who will write Scream 7. While James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick wrote the two most recent installments of the franchise, Christopher Landon is notably a screenwriter himself. In fact, he co-wrote some of his most recent directorial projects including Freaky and Happy Death Day 2U. As such, we’ll have to see how the screenplay process begins once the writers strike comes to an end.
This is no doubt an exciting announcement that should have Scream fans both hyped and cautious. The original four installments of the franchise were all helmed by horror icon Wes Craven. Audiences were hesitant to see new directors tackle the series with Scream and Scream VI. Though they’ve proven to be quite successful, and as such, it’ll be interesting to see what yet another director has to offer.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Scream 7 updates as we have them. For now, Paramount is expected to once again distribute the new installment, and we should hopefully have some more news once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes come to an end.
