The Five Nights at Freddy’s video game franchise is set to receive its first live-action movie adaptation. Fans have already received their first look at the film with some rather exciting trailers. Now the official MPAA rating has been revealed for Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Naturally, fans are hopeful that the film will retain the tense atmosphere of the games. But, considering the age range that the games aim for, the MPAA rating for the film isn’t quite as strong as some older fans might’ve hoped for. In fact, Five Nights at Freddy’s has been rated PG-13.
Here’s the reason for the rating given to Five Nights at Freddy’s:
“Strong violent content, bloody images and language.”
Of course, this isn’t exactly a shock. It was always likely that the film would be somewhat toned down for younger audiences. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be any less of a horror movie. In fact, many PG-13 films (or, PG for that matter) have been celebrated in the horror genre. A recent example would be another Blumhouse film: M3GAN.
With a PG-13 rating, M3GAN managed to make $181 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. The film was obviously considered a success and a sequel was greenlit soon after. It’s likely that Five Nights at Freddy’s will reach similar levels of success. And considering it’s based on a well-known IP – the film could break even bigger numbers.
It’s also worth noting that M3GAN still received a home video release which contained an unrated cut. Perhaps Five Nights at Freddy’s could receive a similar treatment for those older fans. As always, we’ll just have to see what the future holds. But it’s certainly exciting to see the film finally get off the ground.
Five Nights at Freddy’s will be released in theaters and on Peacock on October 27, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news as we have it.
