Horror fans were surprised to see that not only were we getting one, but that three Exorcist sequels have been announced. David Gordon Green is set to direct all three films in the trilogy. Now while the official trailer for the first film has just been released, so too has the release date for its follow-up: The Exorcist: Deceiver.
The next installment in David Gordon Green’s Exorcist trilogy has just been given a 2025 release date as well. Of course, given that the first film is unreleased, it’s unknown what direction a follow-up could take. But it certainly could be interesting considering the trajectory the franchise has taken in the past.
In addition to Exorcist II: The Heretic, which took a more psychedelic approach to Regan’s possession, there was The Exorcist III. Many fans have come around to appreciate The Exorcist III and Brad Dourif’s performance as the Gemini Killer. In fact, some even prefer it to the original. Then, of course, there was 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning which told the story of Father Merrin. It was retooled into 2005’s Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. So there are plenty of films to draw inspiration from for The Exorcist: Deceiver and its unnamed follow-up.
Until then, fans can look forward to The Exorcist: Believer. As mentioned, the first official trailer for the film has finally dropped online. It’s an exciting return to the original film’s world. Especially since the original film’s Ellen Burstyn makes an appearance.
David Gordon Green directed the film from a screenplay he penned alongside Peter Sattler. The story was created by Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Green. In addition to Ellen Burstyn, the cast includes Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Jennifer Nettles, Olivia Marcum, Raphael Sbarge, and Okwui Okpokwasili.
Fans will be able to see The Exorcist: Believer in theaters on October 13, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Exorcist updates as we have them. It looks like the franchise is going to be making quite the impact over the next few years.
