The highly-anticipated film Barbie, based on the iconic toy franchise, is set to hit theaters this month. Ahead of the film’s release, however, one insider reports that Barbie will contain both boob jokes and a F-bomb as some unexpected additions.
Of course, one can imagine such a film would throw in plenty of jokes for the adults in the audience. Though this insider suggests that the jokes are quite a lot for the film. In fact, they claim to be “struck by how Mattel allowed this to happen.”
Specifically, the report was made by insider Matthew Belloni on his podcast The Town on The Ringer. Here’s what he shared:
“I wanna talk about ‘Barbie.’ I went to the ‘Barbie’ premiere last night. It is quite the spectacle. I will leave it to the critics to say whether it’s good or bad, but I was struck by how Mattel allowed this to happen. It is taking the Barbie IP and just running with it.”
He continued by explaining the censored F-bomb the audience will hear in Barbie:
“I mean, there is an F-bomb in the movie. Someone says, ‘Motherf*cker.’ It’s bleeped… But, there are boob jokes. There’s a joke about the creator of Mattel having tax evasion problems. The whole villain is the patriarchy.”
Belloni also adds the following:
“And it spends a lot of time sort of almost apologizing for the fact that this is a ‘Barbie’ movie. Watching it, I was like, ’Oh my god, I cannot believe Mattel allowed them to do this, allowed them Greta Gerwig and Warner Bros. to do this.”
Many adult viewers likely won’t care about the inclusion of such jokes. Though it could be worth knowing for those eager to show Barbie to their kids before knowing what all will be in the film. Either way, it’s been a hit with critics so far, and it’s likely only going to continue finding success.
Barbie was directed by Greta Gerwig, who also co-wrote the film’s script with her partner Noah Baumbach.
In addition to Margot Robbie as the titular Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film’s ensemble cast also includes Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Hari Nef, and Will Ferrell.
Fans will be able to see Barbie on the big screen on July 21, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the film as we have them.
