Blue Beetle is set to introduce the titular DC character in live-action. However, the film’s trailer appears to have upset some users with a line about Batman. Though some found it humorous, others were disappointed to hear Uncle Rudy’s line that “Batman’s a fascist” in the Blue Beetle trailer.
George Lopez’s character shared the line and now director Ángel Manuel Soto and star Xolo Maridueña have given their thoughts via IGN regarding the backlash. Naturally, they felt that the backlash wasn’t warranted and further emphasized that they’re just trying to have a little fun.
Here’s what Soto shared regarding the Blue Beetle line where Batman is said to be a fascist:
“We always wanted to have fun with the way Rudy talks about other superheroes,” said Soto. “So, to the people who got mad at it, give us a chance. We’re just trying to have fun with the characters that we love.”
“Everybody in our movie loves Batman and Superman and Flash,” he added. “And of course, we have criticisms about all of them, as we all should. But that doesn’t mean that we hate Batman. We love Batman.”
As such, Batman fans shouldn’t be upset about the line. It’s just an example of the humor they attempted to place in the film. It also seems to play a part in the overall film’s narrative and how Jaime and his family interpret all of the different superheroes in the world. And, furthermore, how Jaime manages to become his own kind of superhero.
Ángel Manuel Soto directed the film from a screenplay written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
Xolo Maridueña stars as the titular character with Harvey Guillén, Bruna Marquezine as Penny, and Belissa Escobedo as Milagro Reyes. The cast also stars George Lopez as Uncle Rudy, Adrianna Barraza as Nana, Elpidia Carrillo as Rocio, and Damián Alcázar as Alberto.
Blue Beetle is set to be released theatrically on August 18, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional DC updates or information on Blue Beetle as we have it.
