Ridley Scott has returned to work with Gladiator star Joaquin Phoenix for a brand-new film titled Napoleon. Phoenix plays the titular character in an epic film that revolves around the notorious historical figure. Now fans can see Joaquin Phoenix in action as Napoleon with the brand-new trailer.
Specifically, the film is said to capture “Napoleon Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby), showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.”
Here’s the official trailer for Napoleon:
Ridley Scott directed the film from a screenplay penned by David Scarpa. There have been numerous attempts to adapt the story of Napoleon Bonaparte’s life for both film and television.
Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick famously attempted to get one such project off the ground as far back as 1969. And, while his iteration never made it into production, it’ll be exciting to see a filmmaker like Ridley Scott provide his own take. Especially considering Scott’s previous works which include the aforementioned period piece Gladiator and other such iconic projects.
Furthermore, Joaquin Phoenix is a terrific choice to portray Bonaparte. He’s often cited as one of the greatest actors of the 21st century and with performances that include Walk the Line, Joker, and Beau is Afraid, he will no doubt portray the historical figure in a fantastic way for the big screen.
In addition to Joaquin Phoenix, the film stars Vanessa Kirby, Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Matthew Needham, Youssef Kerkour, Phil Cornwell, Édouard Philipponnat, Ian McNeice, Paul Rhys, John Hollingworth, Gavin Spokes, and Mark Bonnar.
The film Napoleon will be released in theaters on November 22, 2023. The film will then be available to stream via Apple TV Plus at a later date. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on Joaquin Phoenix’s projects including Napoleon as we have them.
