Moviegoers have been eager to see Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the all-new film starring Margot Robbie as the titular character. Now critics have seen Barbie and their first reactions to the film include some rather strong responses.
Fans were initially unsure what to expect with the film. After all, a movie based on the iconic toy could go in any number of directions. But according to critics, like Katcy Stephan at Variety, the film is said to be “perfect” in addition to “a nuanced commentary.”
As shared in full below:
#Barbie is perfection. Greta Gerwig delivers a nuanced commentary on what it means to be a woman in a whimsical, wonderful and laugh-out-loud funny romp. The entire cast shines, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in roles they were clearly born to play. 🎀

Other critics shared similar responses, noting in their first reactions that Barbie is their “favorite film of the year” and that “the craftsmanship is incredible.” Here are the other reactions shared by critics via social media:
I can’t officially quit Twitter before telling you all that #Barbie is currently my favorite film of the year. Greta Gerwig somehow exceeded my expectations. She tackles the positives and negatives of Barbie so beautifully. Give Ryan Gosling an Oscar nomination, I’m dead serious!

I have seen #Barbie! The craftsmanship is incredible. In particular the costume & production design includes next-level work that heavily contributes to creating the feeling that these truly are Barbies, their dream houses, and their worlds come to life.
As for the story, that’s… pic.twitter.com/97r3sSodcw

I saw #BarbieTheMovie and Greta Gerwig left me all in my feelings as did the production design, costumes, Hair and makeup! I was living for the dance numbers led by Simu Liu ! It’s overblown fun with a feminist twist😜💗 #BarbieMovie pic.twitter.com/tL7vaUsqT4

#BarbieTheMovie is witty, heartfelt, and downright fun at times. Ryan Gosling is a scene stealer delivering most of the laughs while Margot Robbie’s heartfelt performance will tug at your heartstrings. While I enjoyed most of the film the screenplay feels bloated at times pic.twitter.com/lepggZKZIX

#Barbie caught me off guard & I mean that in the best way possible. It’s funny, bombastic, & very smart. Greta Gerwig aims for the fences & hits a home-run. Margot Robbie’s performance is great & @RyanGosling & @SimuLiu are pure entertainment! The whole cast is brilliant! pic.twitter.com/oXH965aUIF

#BarbieMovie / #BarbieTheMovie is everything you wouldn’t expect. It peels the layers off the superficial doll we all grew up with while showing how Ken is more than an asset and is figuring his identity out. pic.twitter.com/585UL4nOTg

Of course, we’ll have to see if average moviegoers feel the same way. There have been differences between the opinions of critics and the average moviegoers with numerous recent blockbusters. But Barbie could very well be the film to appeal to all sides.
Barbie was directed by Greta Gerwig, who also co-wrote the film’s script with her partner Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie will also produce the film via LuckyChap along with Tom Ackerley. Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and David Heyman for Heyday Films will also produce. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz are attached to the project as executive producers.
In addition to Margot Robbie as the titular Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film’s ensemble cast also includes Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Hari Nef, and Will Ferrell.
Fans will be able to see Barbie on the big screen on July 21, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the film as we have them. As for now, it’s nice seeing that the film is receiving positive reactions.
