Fans of Taylor Swift have long assumed that her song “Dear John” was about former boyfriend John Mayer. However, Swift hasn’t played the 2010 hit since 2012, and now she has a strong message for fans ahead of a surprise performance of the song.
She started off her message by emphasizing how much she loves the crowds at her concerts. It’s these crowds, she states, where “some of the most beautiful things happen.” Here’s how she began:
“I get to stand on this stage every single night of this tour and watch some of the most beautiful things happen,” Swift started. “I see so many beautiful interactions happen, and I hear so many stories about friends that were made at these shows. I watch it happen, and it’s the most unbelievable thing to watch.”
Swift further asks fans not to go after Mayer, noting that they should show “that kindness and gentleness” from her concerts “extend into our internet activities.” Specifically because she has a re-release of her 2010 album Speak Now on the way.
Her message continues:
“I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19,” she adds. “I’m not putting this album out so that you can go and should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.”

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Taylor Swift news updates as we have them. For now, fans can continue looking forward to her performances, and the upcoming re-release of Speak Now. The re-release of the album is intended to aid Swift in her efforts to own the masters for her first six albums. Obviously this would be beneficial for both Swift and her fans. And, in the meantime, they can do their best not to bully John Mayer.
