The Small Soldiers franchise was first introduced in 1998 with the film of the same name. Due to the film’s intense action sequences, however, it didn’t quite impress younger audiences the way the studio had hoped. And while the film still has a strong following, the IP has laid dormant ever since. Now, however, Comadran Studios is teasing fans with Small Soldiers: War for the Necron.
The video below, introduced as a “proof of concept,” reimagines the original Small Soldiers film with all-new characters. Of course, eagle-eyed fans will notice the similarities to the classic Gorgonite and Commando Elite factions. This time we’re introduced to the Necronites and the Space Elite. The two groups appear to be quite similar to their predecessors, with the Necronites representing misunderstood monsters, and the Space Elite their human oppressors.
Small Soldiers: War for the Necron appears to have been digitally animated using Unreal Engine 5. At this time, it’s unknown whether this is to promote a potential video game or a proper film, but it’s clear that the creators hope to honor the spirit of the 1998 original.
Here’s the short:
Gremlins director Joe Dante tackled the original film which saw a new brand of high-tech toys go haywire. The toys were brought to life using highly-advanced computer chips which implemented them with artificial intelligence. And, given the stance of artificial intelligence in today’s everyday life, it seems to be more relevant than ever before. It’s clear, then, that we’ve reached the perfect time to revisit the underrated brand and see what’s possible with today’s technology.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Small Soldiers updates as we have them. It’s likely that this is far from the last outing we’ll see regarding War for the Necron. And, for fans eager to return to the world of the 1998 cult classic, this looks like the perfect opportunity.
