Sony‘s library of Spider-Man spin-off films has been gradually growing. This now includes the likes of Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming film Kraven the Hunter. Nevertheless, it’s now been revealed that Sony has removed one upcoming Spider-Man spin-off movie from their release schedule.
This news comes via Deadline. The Spider-Man spin-off, which is none other than El Muerto, was set to star Bad Bunny as the titular comic book character. It also would’ve been the first live-action Marvel film to be led by a Latino character. Unfortunately, while the film is still in development, it looks like there’s no longer a set release date.
The reasons given for the film’s removal from the schedule reportedly revolve around “Bad Bunny’s tour schedule and the ongoing WGA strike.” As such, it’s unknown when the film could have a date finalized. But for now it looks like the project isn’t completely off the table. So fans will simply have to wait and see what happens in the coming years.
The upcoming El Muerto film is slated to be directed by Jonas CuarĂ³n. The screenplay is being written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. For those unfamiliar with the titular character, he’s described as “an antihero and the son of a luchador next in line to inherit the ancestral power of ‘El Muerto.'”
Obviously plot details at this time are unknown. But it seems as though the antihero direction would follow the same style as some of Sony’s other recent projects. The Venom franchise, for example, follows its titular character as more of an anti-hero than a proper villain.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated Spider-Man spin-off film as we have them. For now, there are still several other projects from Sony’s Spider-Man franchise that fans can look forward to. This includes the upcoming film Kraven the Hunter, Venom 3, and Madame Web.
