Fans may recall when the 2013 film 47 Ronin hit theaters. Sadly, the film received negative reviews and soon enough became one of the biggest box office flops in history. Nevertheless, the Keanu Reeves flick is now becoming a hit on Netflix.
As noted via FlixPatrol, as of this writing, the Keanu Reeves film has reached the number four spot on the U.S. Netflix streaming charts. This is certainly an impressive number for the film – especially given both its critical reception and financial losses in the past. Of course, we’ve seen films find new life on Netflix in the past, and now this seems to be the latest example.
It’s worth noting that Reeves obviously pushed his career forward despite the initial reception of the film. He would continue to star in the John Wick film franchise which revitalized his career monumentally. Interestingly, the 47 Ronin brand itself is far from over, with Netflix having released a stand-alone sequel titled Blade of the 47 Ronin. Likewise, a third film is said to be in development.
Carl Rinsch directed the 2013 47 Ronin film which was penned by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini. The story for the film comes from Chris Morgan and Walter Hamada. Of course, the film itself is based on a fictionalized account of the real-life forty-seven rōnin. Though it doesn’t have much in common with other adaptations of the story Chūshingura aka “The Treasury of Loyal Retainers” in which the fictionalized accounts of the real-life group begin.
In addition to Keanu Reeves, the film stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ko Shibasaki.
