The initial launch of Disney Plus meant that subscribers would be treated to exclusive and original Marvel content on the streaming service. And, while that’s been the case for several years now, it looks like Disney Plus is now removing some of their originals to cut costs.
Specifically, Disney Plus has removed two Marvel originals in addition to numerous other films and shows as part of their cost-cutting strategy. This will no doubt upset those completists out there that want Disney Plus to preserve any and all Marvel content at their disposal. Of course, in the age of streaming, it’s clear that services have no problem removing such projects from their platforms altogether.
Now it looks like both Marvel’s Hero Project and Marvel’s 616 have been removed from Disney Plus. The former first debuted on the streaming service on November 12, 2019. The latter debuted in November 2020. As such, both projects have been available on the service for a few years now.
Fans of Marvel’s Hero Project have recognized the documentary series for showcasing real-life kids that have made a difference in their respective communities. This, as the title suggests, highlights how these kids are real-life heroes as a result. As for Marvel’s 616, that particular series was an anthology which lasted for eight episodes. It went over various topics under the Marvel brand that gave viewers much more insight.
It’s unclear exactly why Disney decided to remove these shows for their streaming service. One theory is that they could be written off for tax purposes. Another is that it will allow the company not to pay residual fees. Either way, it’s a controversial strategy, and one that has subscribers in fear of seeing their favorite shows or films removed. Especially when it seems to happen every other day.
