Jenna Ortega has become a household name over the last few years. With appearances in Scream, Scream VI, X, Wednesday, and more, it’s hard not to have seen her in something. Of course, that means plenty of social media discussions, and now Jenna Ortega has opened up about some of the toxic users that come into play with that.
As she shared with Elle Fanning during Variety’s Actors-on-Actors series, the toxicity of online trolling on social media has really taken a toll on Jenna Ortega. This is evident when Ortega begins crying as she discusses her experiences with social media.
Here’s how she started:
“Social media, what it does to anyone our age, it’s such a comparing game,” she states. “It influences bandwagon mentality. It’s very manipulative.”
It’s after this that Ortega cries as she talks about the way people attack your vulnerability:
“They see your vulnerability and twist it in a way that you don’t always expect,” she says.
“It’s so strange. Sorry, I didn’t mean to do this.
“It’s such a hard thing to balance. Because how do you be honest without jeopardising your own health and safety? It’s very easy to feel almost out of control.”
Elle Fanning then agreed with Ortega. For those that are unaware, Fanning has had her own struggles within the entertainment industry. It’s certainly a difficult place despite certain changes in recent times. As always, though, it’s the willingness to speak out that will help change take place. It’s just unfortunate that toxicity has to be a part of social media and the industry in any case.
