It’s a sad day for WWE fans as it’s been confirmed that The Iron Sheik, real name Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, has died at age 81. Fans will no doubt recall his iconic rivalry with fellow wrestler Hulk Hogan in the 1980s.
A statement regarding his death was shared on his official Twitter account. The statement began by emphasizing just how great of a legacy he’s left behind and that he “departed this world peacefully.”
As quoted below:
“Today, we gather with heavy hearts to bid farewell to a true legend, a force of nature, and an iconic figure who left an incredible mark on the world of professional wrestling,” the statement reads. “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of The Iron Sheik, but we also take solace in knowing that he departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations to come.”
The statement continues to emphasize Vaziri’s love for his family, which included both children and grandchildren, and all that he’s managed to accomplish throughout his life. As noted, he “became a cultural phenomenon, transcending the realm of professional wrestling to become a pop culture icon. His memorable catchphrases and unforgettable moments are etched into the memories of fans worldwide. He left an indelible mark on the industry, and his influence can still be felt in the world of wrestling today.”
It’s further concluded that we should “remember him not only for his athletic prowess but also for the joy and inspiration he brought into our lives. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of fans, as well as in the annals of wrestling history.”
Clearly Vaziri made a massive impact throughout his lifetime, one that went beyond his successful wrestling career, and he’ll always be remembered for it. As shared at the very end of the statement: “RESPECT THE LEGEND.”
