John Carpenter has delivered horror fans numerous classics over the years. Of course, some have taken more time than others to catch on, and now one such film – The Thing – could be getting a sequel. Now the beloved filmmaker has teased the possibility of The Thing 2 himself.
The possibility of The Thing 2 was discussed by Carpenter in a recent Q&A during Texas Frightmare Weekend 2023. Fans are no doubt excited by the prospect. Especially when the 2011 film didn’t quite hit the mark with most fans. But having learned from the mistakes of that film, The Thing 2 has plenty of opportunity to follow Carpenter’s iteration more closely.
Here’s what Carpenter shared via Creepy Catalog about the project which may or may not be in talks:
“I have been sworn to secrecy, okay, because there may be, I don’t know if there will be, there may be a Thing 2.”
Obviously this doesn’t reveal much about the potential project. But this fact that Carpenter doesn’t outright deny the possibility should give fans a lot to look forward to. Hopefully we’ll have more clarification in the near future. After all, there does seem to be some kind of Thing-related project in the works.
A direct sequel to The Thing has been in development hell for decades now. It’s come close to fruition several times. Ultimately, however, fans have mostly only received video game and comic book follow-ups to Carpenter’s film. Outside of the 2011 film, it’s a property that hasn’t been explored much on the big screen. Hopefully, however, that’s soon to change. And one can only hope for Carpenter’s involvement and plenty of slimy and gory practical effects to go along with it.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the potential realization of The Thing 2 as we have them. With the success of the newest Halloween films and recent reports of a new Escape from New York on the way, it’s certainly a good time to be a Carpenter fan.
