It’s taken a long time for the Ghostbusters film franchise to get back on its feet. After the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, however, we’re already getting Ghostbusters 4. Now some newly-surfaced set photos for the Ghostbusters sequel reveal the return of an original character.
Many of the original film’s characters made appearances, albeit briefly, in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Now it looks like another character from the original will be making their first live-action appearance in decades. As shared via Daily Mail, actor William Atherton was spotted on set.
Fans will recall that William Atherton played Walter Peck in the 1984 Ghostbusters film. His antagonistic role as an inspector for the Environmental Protection Agency has become an iconic part of the film. Now, aside from an appearance in the non-canon 2009 video game, Atherton is back for another round of ghostbustin’ chaos.

Additionally, as you can see above, the photos also reveal Ernie Hudson reprising his role as Winston Zeddemore. Ghostbusters: Afterlife star Paul Rudd is also seen walking with what appears to be a flightsuit under his robe. Hopefully more images and details will be released as production continues. Reports initially stated that the film would be returning to the New York City setting of the franchise’s original two films. Though this has yet to be confirmed as filming locations include the UK.
Gil Kenan will direct the film this time around, with Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman producing.
The cast includes Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind. Ernie Hudson, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, and Carrie Coon also star.
The new Ghostbusters sequel is slated to hit theaters on December 20, 2023.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Ghostbusters news as we have it. For now, these set photos are an exciting sign of what’s to come.
