Fans waited years for the National Treasure adventure franchise to come back to life. It finally did, albeit as a Disney Plus series, and one without the involvement of Nicolas Cage. Now it’s been revealed that the series – titled National Treasure: Edge of History – has been cancelled after only one season.
As shared via Deadline, Disney’s streaming service “has opted not to renew the freshman adventure series.” It’s currently unclear why this decision was made. However, Disney Plus, much like other streaming services, are working towards bringing down their budgets. We’ve already seen Disney do this by cutting down on the amount of Marvel content they’ve been releasing.
With that in mind, it’s possible that Edge of History just didn’t perform well enough to justify the costs. It’s no doubt disappointing news for fans of the series and the franchise. Of course, there’s always the chance that Disney could try doing another project with the brand in the future.
Harvey Keitel returned for the series as FBI agent Peter Sadusky. Similarly, Justin Bartha reprised his role as Riley Poole. The new additions to the show included Lisette Olivera, Zuri Reed, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Jake Austin Walker, and Lyndon Smith. And, as mentioned above, Nicolas Cage did not reprise his role from the films for the show. It’s possible that his absence led to the show’s unsatisfactory performance but that remains to be seen.
The first and only season of National Treasure: Edge of History can still be streamed via Disney Plus.

It was previously reported that actor Nicolas Cage is in talks for a possible National Treasure return. Obviously, however, this won’t be in the form of the short-lived television series.
