Mortal Kombat fans are excited to get a sequel to the very successful 2021 live-action Mortal Kombat film. Of course, many are hopeful that certain video game characters left out of that entry will appear in the sequel. Now it looks like one of those characters, Johnny Cage, is set to appear – with Karl Urban in talks for the Mortal Kombat 2 role.
This news was shared by The Wrap. They report that “Karl Urban is in final talks to star as fan-favorite character ‘Johnny Cage’ in the sequel to New Line’s hit 2021 action adventure ‘Mortal Kombat‘ based on the blockbuster video-game franchise.” As mentioned, Cage’s absence was something brought up by fans before the first film’s release. A post-credits scene later teased Cage’s appearance in a potential sequel. Now it looks like that plan will come to fruition.
Of course, it’s no surprise. Johnny Cage is one of the most popular characters from the video game franchise. His appearances go back as far as the original arcade game from 1992. In the years since, he’s become one of the most iconic recurring characters in the series. It only makes sense to bring Johnny Cage into the live-action Mortal Kombat world – especially with an actor like Karl Urban behind the character.
Fans will recognize Karl Urban for his roles in projects that include The Boys, Thor: Ragnarok, Star Trek, and Judge Dredd in the movie Dredd. He certainly has the star power to bring a character like Johnny Cage to life. Especially knowing how much of a Hollywood icon Cage is supposed to be.
Simon McQuoid is returning to direct the Mortal Kombat sequel, with Jeremy Slater having written the screenplay for the new film. The original video games that the films are based on were created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.
