The 1993 film Cliffhanger is considered by many to be a classic example of Sylvester Stallone’s acting career. Now he’ll be turning to star in a brand-new reboot of the beloved action thriller.
As shared via Deadline, Ric Roman Waugh is set to direct the film while the screenplay was penned by Mark Bianculli. They add that Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film label will produce with Rocket Science and Stalone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions.
Sylvester Stallone is currently the only actor attached to the Cliffhanger reboot. Though “casting for other roles is currently underway.” It’s been confirmed that Stallone will be reprising his role as Ranger Gabriel “Gabe” Walker. Other plot details for the film, however, are unknown.
Director Ric Roman Waugh shared the following statement:
“Growing up with the biggest action films of the 80s and 90s, working on many of them myself, Cliffhanger was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true,” he shared. “It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”
Moritz added:
“I’ll never forget the thrill I felt watching Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger. I am incredibly excited to be working with him and Ric Waugh to continue the story of Gabe Walker and introduce this iconic story to a new generation of filmgoers around the world.”
It’ll be interesting to see Sylvester Stallone revisit this film after so many decades. Especially after having him return for such franchises as the Rambo and Rocky films.
