The 2004 comedy film Dodgeball has been a fan-favorite for almost twenty years. Now, after all this time, it’s being reported that Dodgeball is finally getting a sequel.
The report, as shared via Deadline, claims that actor “Vince Vaughn will return to star in (and likely produce) a sequel” to the hit film. This is certainly exciting news – especially for fans that thought a sequel to the movie was completely off the table by now.
Interestingly, they also note that Jordan VanDina is writing the screenplay for the film with 20th Century Studios. It’s worth noting that the original film was both written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. As such, it’s unknown if Thurber will be involved with the new film in any capacity. But knowing Vince Vaughn is involved should certainly make this a project worth watching.
The 2004 film already had quite an impressive cast. This included such stars as Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Missi Pyle, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman, and William Shatner. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see any number of them return alongside Vince Vaughn for another round of chaotic fun.
The exact plot details for the project are unknown. But it’s said to be based on an idea from Vaughn and “that it will continue the story of Vaughn’s prize-winning gym owner.” There are certainly plenty of ideas to explore with this concept. As such, we have to hope that more information is brought to light soon.
For now, though, this is an exciting moment for Dodgeball fans and we’ll be sure to keep you up-to-date on the sequel as we have more news. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them. The original Dodgeball film, made on a budget of $20 million, managed to gross more than $168 million worldwide.
