Many fans have been anxious to know whether or not Smile would be getting a sequel. After all, the 2022 horror film was a hit with fans, critics, and at the box office. Now Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed that Smile 2 is in the works.
As noted via Collider, “the announcement came during the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon.” Though they add that it’s unknown if director Parker Finn will return to direct and whether or not any cast members from the first film will be returning. Nevertheless, fans should no doubt be pleased that a sequel is happening at all.
It’s worth noting that Parker Finn recently signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures. And, furthermore, the deal is expected to involve a number of different horror projects. It wouldn’t be surprising, then, to see one of the films on his slate be the sequel to Smile. But we’ll just have to see what else Paramount has to share on that front in the near future. For now we know the film is at least in the works.
Smile, which was produced with a $17 million budget, was given a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures. Their risk turned out beautifully as the film went on to gross nearly $220 million at the box office. As such, it makes sense why Paramount would want to put a sequel into production. And, furthermore, why fans are so excited to see what’s in store for this all-new story.
Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional horror news or updates on the newly-announced Smile 2 as we have them. It’s certainly great to see an original IP find so much success, however, and hopefully Hollywood continues to make such moves in the genre.
The first Smile film is currently available to stream via Paramount Plus.
