Fans at CinemaCon 2023 got their first look at the highly-anticipated sequel to The Meg, The Meg 2: The Trench. As one might expect, the new blockbuster sequel features even more megalodon action than its predecessor. And the newly-shared CinemaCon footage for The Meg 2: The Trench shows just that.
The trailer opens with a slightly comical tagline: “They’re back for seconds.” And, furthermore, the trailer opens with a flashback set 65 million years in the past. It’s a moment that fans of the books will recognize. A T-Rex actually gets eaten by a megalodon shark on screen.
Of course, the trailer soon speeds back to the present. Fans are then treated to the return of several characters from the original film. Notably, actor Jason Statham returns in some truly mind-boggling ways. In fact, the footage ends with his character riding off on a jet ski – through the air – with a sword in his hand. That’s definitely one way to take on a giant shark.
With that in mind, the trailer promises that there will be many other creatures than just sharks this time around. It looks like all kinds of giant sea creatures will be making their way out of the titular trench. In fact, the trailer even promises the appearance of a creature with tentacles as it attacks a helicopter. You’ve got to love seeing this kind of over-the-top Syfy channel attitude performed with a massive budget. And, given by how much money The Meg made in theaters, it’s not surprising to see.
Hopefully we’ll have the official footage from The Meg 2: The Trench available online soon. But this is certainly an exciting film for fans of giant monsters or those who merely want to see the chaos from Steve Allen’s Meg novels on the big screen.
Ben Wheatley directed The Meg 2: The Trench. The screenplay for this highly-anticipated sequel was written by Dean Georgaris and Jon & Erich Hoeber.
Fans can expect to see The Meg 2: The Trench in theaters on August 4, 2023.
