Ari Aster has become a widely-recognized name for horror fans. His newly-released film Beau is Afraid, however, has audiences freaking out. The film seems to defy everyone’s expectations. Now star Joaquin Phoenix is warning potential viewers not to see Beau is Afraid with the influence of mushrooms.
The actor was discussing the film with Fandango when he decided to give the warning. He had already opened up about the anxiety-inducing nature of the film. As such, Phoenix doesn’t think it’s a good idea for anyone to consume mushrooms before seeing the film. But if they do – they should record it.
Here’s what he had to share:
“I just wanted to make a public service announcement and say, do not take mushrooms and go see this f**king movie. But if you do it, film yourself. But don’t do it!”
Of course, for those who’ve seen the film, they might understand this warning perfectly. Many viewers have been struggling to cope with the mind-breaking style of the film. Between backlash and divisiveness, it’s clear that Aster has hit a nerve with viewers, and taking mushrooms might not be the best way to process that. Either way, it goes to show that both Aster and Joaquin Phoenix are continuing to make some exciting changes within their respective careers. And one can’t wait to see what’s next – including Phoenix’s role in Joker 2.
The upcoming surrealist comedy horror film was both written and directed by Ari Aster.
The cast, led by Joaquin Phoenix, includes Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen Mckinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Denis Ménochet, Kylie Rogers, Armen Nahapetian, Parker Posey, and Patti LuPone.
Fans can currently see Beau is Afraid in theaters – and hopefully without using mushrooms. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on the film and the upcoming projects of director Ari Aster as we have them.
